Steel beams, columns and structural steel

We supply and install custom steel beams, columns and structural elements for reinforcements, extensions, replacements and new builds. We work with standard rolled profiles (IPE, HEB, HEA, UPN), welded plate girders for high loads or large spans, and singular pieces when the project requires.

Types of beams and columns we fabricate

Each profile has its own field of application. Knowing the differences lets you choose the most efficient solution and avoid over-sizing the structure:

  • IPE: rolled I-beam, narrow section, light and cost-effective for standard floors
  • HEB: rolled H-beam, wide flange, high load-bearing capacity, common in columns and primary beams
  • HEA: a lighter variant of the HEB, with a good weight-to-capacity balance
  • UPN: U-channel sections, used in purlins, lintels and secondary elements
  • Square and rectangular hollow sections: ideal for exposed columns and bracing
  • Welded plate girders: welded plate forming bespoke profiles for singular spans or loads
  • Cellular beams: lightened with openings, allowing large spans to be covered with less weight

Beams for reinforcements and extensions

A large share of the work in beams and columns is for reinforcements and extensions of existing buildings. Replacing a load-bearing wall with a beam, reinforcing a floor for a new use, increasing the clear height of a premises by removing a false ceiling and an awkward column, or opening a void in a structural wall are common interventions that require careful calculation, prior propping and precise installation.

The typical process to replace a load-bearing wall with a beam is: a technical site visit assessing the condition of the wall and the floor above, calculation of the required beam (usually HEB or HEA), propping of the floor, installation of the beam on temporary supports, concreting or bolting of the permanent supports, and removal of the wall. The whole process must be backed by a technical project and, usually, by works supervision.

  • Replacement of load-bearing walls with HEB or HEA beams
  • Reinforcement of existing floors for a new use
  • Opening of voids in structural walls
  • Temporary shoring with propping
  • On-site welding or bolting
  • Intumescent paint when R30, R60 or R90 is required

Welded plate girders and special solutions

When rolled profiles do not reach the required performance (whether due to load, span or available depth) we turn to welded plate girders: sections made of welded plates (web plus flanges) sized to measure. They make it possible to resolve variable-depth beams, triangulated beams for large cantilevers and singular elements in industrial architecture. Their fabrication is more labour-intensive, but the result is a piece optimised to the millimetre for the specific situation.

Surface treatment and fire protection

An exposed steel beam or column needs protection against corrosion and, in many cases, against fire. The standard protection is primer plus synthetic enamel, sufficient for dry indoor environments. In humid warehouses or exposed exterior structure, hot-dip galvanising or epoxy plus polyurethane paint systems of 200 to 300 microns are applied.

Fire protection depends on the building use and its height. Intumescent paint is the most widespread solution: once applied at a calculated thickness, it expands with heat, forming an insulating layer that protects the structure for the required number of minutes (R30, R60, R90, R120). Another option is encasement with board or a sprayed-mortar coating.

  • Primer plus synthetic enamel for standard interiors
  • Hot-dip galvanising for corrosive or outdoor environments
  • Epoxy plus polyurethane paint for chemical or coastal settings
  • Intumescent paint for R30, R60, R90 or R120
  • Encasement with fireproof board or sprayed mortar

Which type of client it is ideal for

The beams and columns service caters to a wide range of profiles:

  • Private clients and residents' associations that need to replace a load-bearing wall with a beam
  • Restaurants, retail and offices opening voids or refurbishing a floor
  • Industry extending or reinforcing existing floors
  • Construction firms that outsource the supply and installation of specific elements
  • Architects and engineering firms that need special bespoke elements fabricated to measure

Frequently asked questions

Can you replace a load-bearing wall with a beam?
Yes — with technical project and works supervision. We prop the floor, install the calculated beam (typically HEB or HEA), secure the supports and remove the wall safely.
Which steel do you use?
S275JR for most applications and S355JR when the calculation requires it (high loads, long beams or singular pieces).
Do you apply intumescent paint?
Yes — on exposed structure requiring R30, R60, R90 or R120 fire resistance per fire protection regulations.
Do you make custom welded plate girders?
Yes. When standard rolled profile doesn't reach the required performance, we fabricate plate girders with welded plate sized to the millimetre.
Do you only supply steel or also install?
We do both. Some contractors buy machined supply only; others hire the full installation. Both options are available.
Can a beam be installed in an operating premises?
Yes — provided calculation and propping guarantee safety. We schedule works by hours or phases to minimise impact on activity.
